CAEN RFID Releases its first UHF Reader based on Intel® UHF RFID Transceiver R1000

Assago (Milan), Viareggio (Lucca), March,8th 2007

Intel Corporation and CAEN RFID, leading provider of electronic instrumentation for radio frequency identification, announce a further step ahead of a collaboration to boost the adoption of RFID technology. Following a recent announcement on the decision to integrate Intel® network processor Intel®IXP455 in its reader family, CAEN RFID has chosen to integrate also the Intel® UHF RFID Transceiver R1000in its range of RFID Easy2Read® products.

The advent and rapid uptake of RFID by some industrial sectors is just a first step in the spread of this technology, which has extensive potential for use and tangible effects on business. Intel® and CAEN RFID were immediately aware of the importance this technology could have in the near future, and have invested heavily to ensure the rapid uptake of RFID and to take the most of its advantages.

CAEN RFID has developed a new product, namely A528, that uses the Intel® UHF RFID Transceiver R1000. The A528 is an OEM UHF compact module that can operate in both U.S. (FCC part 15) and European (ETSI EN 302 208) regulatory environments and is fully programmable up to 500 mW conducted power. Its features make it the ideal reader for easy integration into multiregional RFID printers, label applicators, handheld devices and any other fixed or mobile device requiring UHF tags programming and reading.

“We have been collaborating with INTEL for more than one year, testing and learning the usage of the various pre-releases of the R1000 Transceiver”, declared CAEN RFID Marketing Director Giovanni Grieco. “The features of the Intel R1000 Transceiver will enable us to increase the performances of our compact modules, thus providing a powerful and flexible OEM module for most embedded and mobile RFID applications.”

“The CAEN A528 RFID reader demonstrates the innovative size and performance that is now possible with the Intel R1000 transceiver”, said Michael J. Reed, General Manager of Intel’s RFID Operation. “We are happy that CAEN has chosen Intel technology for their RFID readers and look forward to continued collaboration.”

“The new A528 is a result of the joint effort of CAEN RFID and Intel, and it responds to customers’ need of a compact, easy to use, and reliable UHF reader, based on the most advanced technologies”, commented Filippo Mursia, Embedded Sales Manager for South Europe, Intel Corporation. “We are happy that CAEN RFID has chosen Intel’s embedded technologies for this project. This is a further demonstration of how easy and effective it is for a local and innovative company in Italy to collaborate with an international technology leader like Intel, to provide customers with a solution developed on basis of their needs”.

Information about CAEN RFID
CAEN RFID is a privately owned company, a leader in the design and manufacture of RFID readers and tags using UHF. The company is a recent spin-off from CAEN S.p.A. (Electronic Nuclear Equipment Construction), which has 27 years of experience in electronics for nuclear and particle physics experiments. This experience has enabled CAEN to take on the challenge of new industries such as Aerospace, Microelectronics and the emerging RFID technology. CAEN RFID was the first company in Europe to manufacture and supply UHF (Ultra High Frequency) long range readers. CAEN RFID’s active participation in EPC Global and ETSI workgroups enables the company to supply state-of-the-art RFID readers and tags for existing technology.
